Abstract: This paper analyzes the electromagnetic transients produced during the start of the motors: discharge, jet and dredging, installed in Amaluza I Dredger of the Paute Molino Hydroelectric Power Plant using the software Alternative Transients Program - ATP. The motors start by the method of reduced voltage by using only one Korndorfer autotransformer. Each motor is modeled using the Windsyn component of ATP, the mechanical load is simulated taking into account that in pumps, the torque varies as the square of speed. In the model of the autotransformer, is taken into account topology of the core, the nonlinear inductance of each column and yoke are modeled with the Jiles-Atherton method in order to simulate the hysteresis loop and estimate the residual flow. The influence of the residual flux is observed in the amplitude of the magnetizing currents, caused during the re-energizing that transformer is subjected by starting of each motors. In this way can be identified the origin of discharges that have occurred in high voltage terminals of the autotransformer and the main cause of various damage suffered by this equipment. Finally, by means of transient state simulations, solutions are proposed to prevent discharges and the autotransformer damage.
