Resumen: The present project is a study of the removal of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) from Ecuadorian agricultural oil by multilayer filtration. In the experimental tests the Lewatit® AF5 resin and the Hydraffin 30N activated carbon were used as filter media. To determine the optimum operating conditions of the filter, a factorial design 32 was performed, the first factor was the oil temperature with three levels, 20, 65 and 110°C and the second one the WHSV with three levels 2,4 h-1; 4,8 h-1 and 7,2 h-1. With each condition, 4 samples of the filtered oil were taken, every hour and a half; these samples were analyzed by chromatography using the standard EPA 8310 polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons (EPA, 1986). After analyzing the results, it was concluded that the highest removal percentage of naphthalene (99.99%), phenanthrene (85,04%) and pyrene (99,99%) was obtained at T = 110°C and WHSV = 7,2 h-1. With these conditions, a backwash was performed for 2 hours with distilled water and another with 98% methanol, obtaining with the latter a better regeneration of the bed, naphthalene (97,56%), phenanthrene (83,88%) and pyrene (97,43%) very similar to those obtained with virgin resins.
