Zusammenfassung: El incremento del número de vehículos que circulan en las ciudades del mundo ha sido calificado como la principal fuente de contaminación ambiental, por esta razón, la industria automotriz está desarrollando nuevas tecnologías y normativas para regular el porcentaje de emisiones vehiculares; además de esto se ha desarrollado sistemas de control de emisiones, motores más eficientes, mejor calidad de combustibles entre otros, con el afán principal de contribuir con la reducción de los efectos contaminantes producto de la combustión en el interior de los motores, pretendiendo así reducir en un elevado porcentaje los elementos contaminantes. El convertidor catalítico fue desarrollado debido a la necesidad de controlar y reducir las emisiones contaminantes, su principal función es la trasformación de los gases peligrosos en otros menos nocivos para el ambiente y perjudiciales para la salud. El presente trabajo pretende enfocar las ventajas y beneficios que un convertidor catalítico ofrece como mecanismo de reducción de emisiones y desarrollar un procedimiento que permita evaluarlos. Para el estudio y desarrollo de este proyecto, se lo ha separado en tres partes importantes; la primera recopila toda la información necesaria sobre el principio de funcionamiento tanto del motor como de los convertidores catalíticos y demás mecanismos de control de emisiones. En la segunda parte se desarrolla la metodología a seguir para determinar la eficiencia del convertidor catalítico y por último en la tercera se aplica la metodología de pruebas a convertidores catalíticos de diferentes características y se analizan los resultados obtenidos.
