Abstract.- The high costs of vitrectomies do not allow that poor people can access to them that is the reason to build a vitrectomy prototype for intraocular surgery to treat diabetic retinopathies and problems with vitreous for improving the vision and avoid blindness. Vitreofago has an accessible value and was designed and built with standard components and supplies of low cost. The attendance to surgeries helped to make this prototype in order to understand in depth and the requirements of the surgery, procedures, skills and instruments. The hardware of the cut, aspiration and irrigation system was designed together with the voltage sources. In the cut system the cut speed is controlled, in the aspiration the vacuum pressure is generated and regulated, in the irrigation the salt balanced solution is controlled into the eye. The software for each system was developed for controlling external elements with microcontrollers. Vitreofago was tested with pig´s eyes in the operating room getting satisfactory results, the cut speed efficiency and the aspiration was demonstrated during the surgery maintaining the ocular pressure and preventing the eyes from collapsing.
