Bedoya Molina, Marco Vinicio

Paredes Gordillo, Cristian Alejandro
Guarnizo Guayanay, Jorge Oscar
Abstract .- The automotive industry has perfected the seats to provide comfort and safety for vehicle occupants, through the innovative efforts of national and international companies.
Abstract.- The last decade has seen a large growth of the automotive fleet of our country; also, the new government policies have encouraged that the different automotive brands are forced to reduce imports of vehicles, whether they are assembled or CKD condition; fomenting the national automobile assembly industry . For this reason it is necessary that our automotive industry see these policies as an opportunity of growth on production capacity and technological development. Currently the level of metal auto parts that are delivered to the assembly plants does not have a complex nature, and they are usually smaller reinforcements. If we want an auto industry that can compete internationally with other companies of the region, we need to apply process with better technological level. In the present project has developed a real example of a car part which has an complex draw, with the help of the simulation program we had defined pressing forces, pressure pad forces, draw beds placements and the final shapes of the forming tools, culminating in the tool design.

This investigation shows the mechanical behavior of a diesel engine CRDi by analyzing each one of the sensors and actuators that participate in this operation. Through protocols static and dynamic tests previously established, waveforms are obtained in two specific geographic areas to 0 and 2300 meters above sea level using equipment as oscilloscope, scanner and other measuring instruments. With this investigation we can determinate different variations that exist in each of sensors and actuators in altitude testing and then it analyzes the results in order to appreciate the behavior of a diesel engine with common rail direct injection.

Recalde Rojas, Mauricio Norberto
Revelo Argoti, Romel Vladimir
This study determine the emission factors for petrol vehicle using static and dynamic tests in vehicles that move in Quito city, for which statistically it takes into account the size of the most appropriate and representative sample of local vehicle fleet. Later, an experimental procedure is developed through test benches in order to get the variables used to calculate the static and dynamic factors, i.e. the pollutants concentration is measured using the two idle speed static cycle and IM-240 dynamic cycle respectively, then determine the fuel consumption utilizing the Quito drive cycle. Finally, the static and dynamic emission factors are compared in order to find a mathematical correlation that allow to get dynamic values based on static tests conducted locally.

Tamayo Benavides, Juan Pablo
Brake tests are carried out by certified laboratories under the WP 29 forum of the United Nations. These laboratories based their certification procedures on standards and regulations which does not describes typical surfaces found in Andean region. By analyzing the procedures stated in regulation ECE 13-H and 49 CFR 571, a brake test procedure was obtained to be followed on uneven road surfaces; likewise, it was determined that from all the variables involved during braking the most useful for further analysis are: speed and vehicle acceleration, braking time and distance. After the selection of test vehicles on pickup trucks segment, brake tests were performed on two tracks, paved and unpaved (cobbled), to compare the ABS brake performance of every vehicle.

Rojas Reinoso, Edgar Vicente
This investigation aims to determine through an alternative way the torque and power of a spark ignition engine. At first, the signals of three different vehicles, which are the best-selling cars in our country, were acquired and processed by developing several test in the dynamometer bench by using the protocol based on the INEM 960 norm, the use of the DAQ USB 6008 electronic card and the programming in the Labview Software. Subsequently, a statistical analysis is performed using the Minitab software in order to determine that the cylinder capacity, the vehicle speed and signal power are highly significant variables, which represent a direct incidence on the calculation. In the results, there were obtained two equations that govern the behavior of the torque and power for vehicles with a cylinder capacity of 1.4 to 2.4 liters. In addition, the maximum load diagrams of torque and power regarding the speed of the vehicle at different heights above sea level are presented. Finally, road test are performed at different driving conditions with the purpose of proving the veracity of the obtained results, which are also compared with the measured results in a dynamometer bench, obtaining a 92% confidence interval, which demonstrates that these ones do not exhibit a highly significant statistical difference.

Molina Narváez, José Fernando
The investigation defined in the first instance the fuel injection system of a compression ignition engine, then the method of mechanical vibration for predictive maintenance is analyzed for the purpose of clearly state a theoretical framework that grounds the analysis to be performed. Established the theoretical foundation, we proceed to define an experimental design and the respective experimental tests are performed, obtaining the necessary data are then processed through an algorithm generated in the mathematical software Matlab®, the result of this process are defined spectra operation in the compression ignition engine. Then proceed to define the spectra vibration patterns under normal operating conditions in the engine compression ignition, In addition define and describe the spectra of failures simulated on the engine, then the validity of the results is established through of the verification that the model assumptions are met. Finally he proceeded to an analysis and presentation of results, which leads to conclusions with respect to the determination and identification of faults by analyzing mechanical vibration, recommendations also have to consider and work also sets the future related to the topic under study.

Due to the growth of the fleet the state creates the pollution tax, which is generated by automobile engines, taking into account displacements greater than 1500 cm3. To address this need the design, construction and validation of a prototype system is proposed to determine the total displacement of an Otto cycle engine using a noninvasive method by Labview. The prototype system consists of a software which allows using neural networks, know the vehicle's engine and hardware, which consists of a MAF sensor, a MAP sensor, a room temperature sensor, a voltage meter of battery, filtering electronic card entry signals and data acquisition card. This system takes the signal based on the flow of air entering the intake manifold through the MAF sensor also takes cues such as depression that has the engine to start and barometric pressure through the MAP sensor, temperature environment and battery voltage when to start, these data generated when giving start are stored, before being analyzed using a neural network, which will allow to identify different types of displacements.

Chica Segovia, Juan Fernando
Rivera Campoverde, Néstor Diego
The city of Cuenca is located at 2550 meters above sea level, resulting in reduction of engine power of motor vehicles due to the decrease in atmospheric pressure and the amount of oxygen in the air, bringing an increase in the emission of pollutants in the exhaust gas and increased fuel consumption. To this must be added the types of fuels available in the market, which generate different responses in internal combustion engines. Using a factorial experimental design of two levels with intermediate points the degree of influence that the extra gas and super addition to the stoichiometry of the mixture and the advancement to power in motor operation is determined. Based on optimizing the engine operating point is modified achieving improved performance in a 1.59% concentration and reduce emissions to 8%.

Guanuche Larco, Denny Javier
Noroña Merchán, Marco Vinicio
In recent years, Latin American automotive industry has intensified its work to raise the competitiveness of the assembly plants. In some countries in the region this implies an increase in local production, a redesign of processes promoting efficiency and cost reduction of import tariffs. In this work the assembly boards in an Ecuadorian automotive assembly plant and its impact on efficiency, production costs and the percentage of local content of the plant is studied. The design of a new assembly line that can be implemented within or outside the assembly and feasibility analysis, financial and economic sensitivity of the two proposals that are generated not include the cost of equipment or assembly are performed is proposed. As a result it plans to work with an assembly line in which boards are produced for both commercial vehicles and passenger vehicles incorporating a carousel conveyor chain. This new line reduces the total assembly time by 15%. Additionally the possibility of assembly boards in a separate facility outside the assembly is studied. In this case, the economic analysis to suggest that, if not considered the costs of acquiring the carrier as part of this proposal, the project is feasible, as shown in the calculation of indicators such as net present value, internal rate 39.7% return, which exceeds the minimum rate of return that was obtained from 16.67%. The sensitivity analysis shows that the main risks of the project are that the demand decreases by 19.9% based on the current demand, giving a negative VAN if the price of service assembly to $ 11 is held. Additionally, it should be noted that based on the study of the new assembly line proposed calculating the percentage of local content of the panels is made and based on this percentage is possible to reduce the amounts payable by way of fees, surcharges for significant amount. We can say that the process redesign, incorporating technology implemented in the design of the plant help to improve assembly times and thus saving on production costs, improving the competitiveness of the plant analyzed.

This article describes a method for obtaining factors vehicular emissions, using the simplified model of combustion applied to two different driving cycles. The first of them is IM240 (cycle route simulation using a dynamometer) and the second one is an on board cycle (real cycle route in city roads and highways), for which, the concentrations of emissions and fuel consumption were measured for each cycle. The aim of this study is to prove that the real factors, CO, HC and NOx, obtained from On Board cycle, can be measured in a simulated cycle on a dynamometer through the introduction of adjustment factors such as for EFCO(Route)=0,442 + EFCO(IM240), EFHC(route)=0,012+ EFHC(IM240), and EFNOx(route)=0,049 + EFNOx(IM240). This research was conducted in 5 vehicles to prove that is statistically reproducible and has a high reliability equal to the 95% of measurements taken in each procedure.

Caracterización de partes reparadas de vehículos siniestrados
Gaguancela Sañaicela, Julio César
Puente Castro, Santiago Raúl
This work presents the characterization of repaired parts at damaged vehicles, highlighting the mechanical, physical and microstructure properties by tensile, hardness, metallography and spark tests made at Stress Analysis and Vibration (LAEV), Extractive Metallurgy, Metallography, Wear and Failure Laboratories at Escuela Politécnica Nacionl, EPN. The theory indicates parts, operation, types of structures and automobile bodies used by vehicle manufacturers that provide passive safety for the occupants, defining the deformable automobile parts to be analyzed, trademark and model. The results were obtained by a proper selection of cutting process to the specimens of the structural elements to maintain their properties. The changes undergone by the material are identified in three groups of specimens: the first in an area where there has not been any deformation, the second at sector where the part was deformed and straightened at room temperature and the third where the part were straightened at 80ºC. To establish the characteristics and behavior of automotive part materials, the NTE, INEN, ASTM, JIS standards were used in cars with the highest number of units in the local (Quito) and national market, for which seven striken units were selected, that they had a kind of lateral, frontal and scope collision. Finally conclusions and references are indicated.

Zumba Tenezaca, Xavier Alex
The altitude produces effects not only on pressure, but also on the atmospheric temperature, thus on the oxygen concentration in the air. Altitude not only decreases the stated power and the efficiency power, but also it increases the specific fuel consumption. This research is focused on figuring out the influences on pollutant emissions, torque, power and specific fuel consumption of the vehicle with the biggest demand in Cuenca (Chevrolet Grand Vitara 2.0L), by varying 6 types of spark plugs that are marketed in Ecuador. These determinations will based on the spark plugs construction parameters (material, degree heat, light tip and electrode geometry). Static tests are validated by RTE INEN 2203:2000 and 2204:2002 standards for emissions by TIS test (Two Idle Speed). Talking about the dynamic tests, they are validated by the European driving cycle NEDC and by the dyno MAHA LPS 3000. Additionally, this research determines that NGK BKR5E-11 spark plug increases 18% engine performance due to the fact that this spark plug issues fewer polluting gases, has better cold performance, offers lower fuel consumption and does not sacrifice the power and the torque of the vehicle; in contrast to the lower performing spark plug (ACDELCO MFR3LS).

Campoverde Toledo, Pablo Vinicio
The present paper develops the study of the fuel temperature and pressure effect on an internal combustion engine performance. Throughout experimental design analysis, it determines the condition of data intake in order to provide a statistic model that establishes the variation of the motor performance, emissions and thermal efficiency as they depend on the input variables. The obtained data is processed in the statistic software MINITAB®, which allows a complete analysis including the randomization of the samples, the identification and evaluation of the variables that influence the most in the experiment, as well as the variables interaction, combination and its effects. Optimal values are obtained in order to improve the performance. After having found the optimal zone, an experiment is conducted in which the results using standard values of the engine are compared to those when using optimal values sample. The engine thermal performance is analyzed in order to understand how the input variables affect the engine behavior. Power measured in the dynamometer is compared with the heat per unit time liberated by the fuel in order to know the engine thermal efficiency.

This study it’s being developed to determined a methodology that will show the influence in the variation of any injection engine comparing high altitude with sea level performance of any injection engine that uses direct gasolina, and executes different tasks, stratified, low homogenous and homogenous. With the use of a scanner and GPS it was posible to conduct a stationary and dynamic test every 500 meters of altitude with a Mazda CX-5 vehicle, applying the specific protocols that are established by the NTN INEN 2213 (Norma Técnica Ecuatoriana) that were conducted on both static(TIS) and dynamic tests. “Analysis and developed of different variables in an electronic injection engine according to the changes of altitude and against sea level performance”. Different results were obtained by developing stratified, low homogenous and homogenous tasks. In both types of testing, the variation of the altitude against sea level performance shows how the pressure of the fuel in the rail is different, the increase in the air, starting time and the performance with the sensors controlling different emissions of any contaminant according to the task mode.

Estudio del Comportamiento de un Motor Ciclo Otto de Inyección Electrónica Respecto al Grado de Concentración del Etanol en la Gasolina Extra para la Ciudad de Cuenca
Espinoza Molina, Fabricio Esteban
Tacuri Moscoso, Fredy Gonzalo
This research evaluates the performance (power, torque, fuel consumption, emissions and combustion pressure) motor vehicle Hyundai Getz 1.4 liters, with indirect electronic fuel injection, when subjected to performance tests with anhydrous ethanol and gasoline mixtures 86.5 octane. The Chapter 1 presents the state of the art on the use of ethanol as fuel, the theoretical foundations of the study variables, emission standards, and the state of pollution in the city of Cuenca. The Chapter 2 describes the equipment, methods, materials, competence of personnel involved in research and the environmental characteristics of place where the tests are developed. The Chapter 3 presents the analysis of the study variables, first the values obtained for E25, E50, E75, E100 regarding E0 fuels are compared, a mathematical model obtained and statistically validated by experimental design is also presented. At the end, emissions are analyzed with respect to the limits established in the rules. This study determined that the use of ethanol in gasoline improves power and torque, emissions of CO, HC decrease significantly, and NOx increase and even exceed the limits set by the EURO standards and the Chilean standard for engines ethanol. The application of statistical study allows a mathematical model that describes the behavior of the study variables for different concentrations of ethanol in gasoline; this is a great advantage because you can determine these variables without the need for tests that require spending resource.

Miranda Vizuete, Diana Carolina
The development of this research was carried out as follows: the test procedure in ASM cycle was established based on the technical guidance issued by EPA. The tests in two vehicles (A & B) were executed with the proper equipment at the facilities of CCICEV. Emission measurements of these test were obtained before and after the catalytic converter in each vehicle. The measurements were analyzed based on Chilean standard used by CCICEV for approval and the percentage difference between the average measurements before and after the catalytic converter. The results obtained in the test vehicle A, showed that none of the measurements obtained exceeded the limits of the Chilean norm and that the efficiency of the catalytic converter is 85.62% in CO, 100% in HC and 94% in NOx. The results obtained in the test vehicle B, showed that none of the measurements obtained exceeded the limits of the Chilean norm and that the efficiency of the catalytic converter is 84.17% in CO, 96.25% in HC and 95.56% in NOx. It was decided that any catalytic converter needs to be replaced.

The interest to promote the local production in Ecuador, fostered by national government, has encouraged the development of new products. The analysis of the feasibility to produce certain imported goods is required to promote manufacturing in Ecuador. In this context, the present research analyses the viability of reinforcing and/or manufacturing heavy-duty machinery cutting tools. Analyses of hardness, microstructure, composition, and heat treatment were performed to three cutting tools (bucket teeth). The results showed that the cutting tool is made out of a tool steel (hypoeutectoid steel alloyed with Si, Mn and Cr) and its microstructure shows evidence of a heat treatment. Three different base materials were studied and one was chosen to be reinforced with hardfacing materiales using electric arc welding, WC filler rod by OAW and WC flame spray powder. Finally, field tests of four cutting tools were performed (reinforced and an original one). It was noted that reinforcement process generated severe heat affected zones. Therefore, a heat treatment is mandatory to be applied to reinforced cutting tools. The hardfacing reinforcement was not significantly affected by the heat treatment

Tires are subjected to elevated dynamic demands that come from the vehicle and constitute a fundamental part in its security; whether they are new or retreaded, they must guarantee the best benefits. In order to confirm what has been said it is necessary to perform an analysis on dynamic behavior between new and retreaded Rim 15 tires, describe their parts and the retreatment process being aware of the variables: temperature, pressure, speed and load according to methods defined in Ecuadorian and International laws to develop resistance tests of the tire casing inside lab and runway. To compare between new tires (nationally produced and imported), and retreaded tires in cold and hot methods it was necessary to obtain data related to rolling resistance, traction (braking), and adherence. According to the analysis of the obtained data, it was evident that the active security and dynamic behavior of a retreaded tire are not similar to a new tire, even though they fulfill the requirements demanded by standard retreaded tires have bigger rolling resistance and bigger braking distance. This work leads to the conclusion that retreaded tires do not have the same equivalence of a new tire, in other words they do not share the same tread properties.

Castelo Valdivieso, Juan Carlos
This work evaluates the changes of torque, power and mechanical losses of an ignition engine caused by the atmospheric pressure and environmental temperature using the free acceleration method. The analysis is performed from a height of 0 to 4000 m.o.s.l., every 250 m.o.s.l., across different Ecuadorian roads, taking into account as variables the pressure and the environmental temperature. The test has been doing in an engine which is equipped with CVV-T variable distribution system, four-cylinder, sequential multi-point injection system and 1400cc total displacement. For the development of the free acceleration method, it was established the moment of inertia as constant according to the values given obtained in dynamometric banks and using the test and error method the right moment of inertia needed for the research was calibrated. The values obtained in the research are compared with the values given by norm DIN70020, since it is the only one that can be applied to heights over 2000 m.o.s.l., resulting in a good approximation of power and torque values.

Encalada Tenesaca, Milton Geovanny
The present work developed a mathematical model for the calculation of the green tax that penalizes the CO2 emissions caused by the consumption of vehicular fuel that is called "IVCCV", which will serve as a new proposal to sanction the pollution generated by the Ecuadorian car park. The mathematical formula consists of the following elements: actual vehicle fuel consumption, CO2 emission factor according to fuel type, CO2 ton cost and an adjustment factor indicating whether the tax has a subsidy or a penalty. The sensitivity analysis of the proposed IVCCV model versus the current IACV model, determines the IVCCV as a more realistic model in ecological terms and environmental taxation because the value of the tax is proportional to the emissions, which encourages the taxpayer to be more efficient in The use of fuels and to acquire vehicles with better performance for the benefit of the environment.

This research is to determine the feasibility of using an electric car with lead acid batteries in relation to the topographic conditions of the Metropolitan District of Quito (DMQ). The quantitative parameters that influence in the energy and mechanical performance were characterized. The tests and study of costs of operation and maintenance are analyzed in this investigation. The applied methodology is of experimental type since a protocol of tests was designed that allowed to operative the procedure to obtain results. For this purpose, the car was instrumented with the BMV - 702 monitoring equipment, which allowed obtaining the real - time values of the electric variables that intervene directly in the battery charge. Based on the study, it was concluded that the use of this car has limited energy performance for the topographic conditions of the DMQ due to its low autonomy that does not exceed 61 km and therefore should be used in short courses. From the economic point of view it is recommended to use them due to their low operating and maintenance costs when compared to internal combustion vehicles.

The present study evaluates the influence of an air deflector on the fuel consumption of a medium-load truck (12 tons), for which the aerodynamic resistance of the vehicle is studied. One of the techniques used is the use of aerodynamic devices located in different parts of the vehicle, in this case an air deflector placed in the top of the truck cab. The test protocol was developed according to DIN 70 030-2, establishing a test route of 10 km distance on the Quinindé (Santo Domingo - La Concordia) route located at 516 m.s.n.m complying with the requirements required by said standard. It travels the 10 km with a constant speed of 90 km/h. Fuel consumption was measured by gravimetry. The result obtained from the study is a saving of 4,63%. The cost-benefit of using the air deflector is $ 241,38 per year, considering the item dedicated to fuel; the investment recovers in 2,5 years.

Amaya Pinos, Marco Esteban
Loja Quezada, Julio César
The objective was to verify if a rear underrun protection device can withstand the impact loads that occur in a rear-end collision accident between a bus and a truck, presenting both an analytical approach that includes a dynamic study to calculate the force that is produced on an impact and, on the other hand, the mechanics of materials were used in an elastoplastic regime to determine if the analyzed device resists the loads to which it is subjected. Finite element simulation software is also used both to compare the calculations performed and to analyze rear underrun bars with more complicated geometries, where an analytical study is very complex. This study began with information search regarding the rear underrun protection devices used and the national and international regulations that rule the design, construction and analysis of these devices, then the truck type best sold was chosen, and of this model the devices most used in this type were considered. Next, a procedure was performed to study these devices, which indicates the steps that should be considered to analyze the correct operation of these bars. As results, it was possible to demonstrate that nowadays the bars used do not resist the loads produced in a collision, obtaining that the analyzed bar does not resist the loads, finally a resizing of the bar to withstand the involved loads was made.

The present investigation it is about the experimentally evaluates emissions of particulate matter (MP2.5) and opacity in five vehicles with diesel engine, using a blend of diesel and kerosene called D20K. Due to the miscibility between these two fuels, the mixture is made in volumetric proportion of 20% of kerosene in diesel. The two fuels and their blend are characterized with the physic and chemical properties through laboratory tests normalized by NTE INEN. To evaluate the effect on the emissions of pollutant gases with five test vehicles in a static test of free acceleration in which the value of opacity specified by NTE INEN 2202 and of Particulate Matter MP2 .5. As an experimental result, it was found that the use of a blend D20K, decreases pollutant emissions of MP2 .5 by an average of 23% for EURO II vehicles and 10% of EURO III vehicles, a decrease in opacity reducing by an average of 7% for EURO II vehicles and 3% for EURO III vehicles. In the sample of vehicles used was evidenced a decrease of the emissions of opacity and MP2.5 with the blend D20K, however the effect of the reduction of this blend can not be generalized for all the vehicles, since the design must be considered of each engine, displacement and emission control technology, since these factors can also have effects on variation of the reduction in pollutant emissions.

It is describing an overview of the most important parts of the disc braking system and its operation, safety and prevention mode. The braking elements in this case are the brake pads. The behavior of the brake pads is studied when they are replaced by alternate elements in front of the original; when by using varied materials result in different behaviors against temperature, braking distance and life time. We study the fundamental problem, which is analyzing the braking temperature, the overheating and the deterioration of the braking system. The theory describes the variables: braking distance as a function of temperature, vehicle weight and the thickness of the pads; these are details that serve to design and build a prototype capable of measuring the temperature and warning the driver. This prototype is easy to use and can be used in a variety of vehicles by modifying the entry data. By using emergency colors, a digital detail of the temperature and an alert sound indicates the overheating of the brake pad. In addition, the experimental model adjusted to the research is defined. The test vehicle is determined and the prototype warning system is placed. The proper functioning of our prototype will be controlled by other devices, and preliminary tests are determined. The analysis of the results of the dynamic tests indicates the values of temperature and braking distance, to determine the critical temperature and the loss of efficiency of the braking system. These temperatures are useful for programming the equipment.

Iza Tobar, Henry Heriberto
Pozo Gordillo, Edwin Martín
The objective of this study is to provide a comprehensive analysis about the incidence of charge equalization for high voltage batteries in hybrid vehicles, and estimate the durability, performance and post use of these batteries. To do so, this study focuses on Toyota Prius vehicles of third generation, because of their large share in the Ecuadorian market. The battery in this vehicle contains 14 packs, and each pack includes 2 cells. The nominal voltage of each cell is 7.2 volt, for a total battery voltage of 201.6 volt. A high incidence of failures in hybrid vehicles involves the high voltage battery charge and discharge system. To overcome this issue, an alternative approach for reconditioning and equalizing the battery is proposed. This procedure is described in the methodology and expected results sections. In cases where battery cells cannot be reconditioned, several alternatives for their development and post use are suggested. Most car companies dispose of damaged battery cells, so these alternative uses are important. The contribution of this study is to recondition a previously damaged, high voltage battery to its optimal performance conditions, and increase its lifetime following adequate procedures. The methods used involve modeling a battery using an equation similar to the one used to model a capacitor. Then, several alternatives are suggested for the use of batteries that are not in optimal performance conditions. Finally, this study also provides an alternative solution to Braman Motors for the maintenance of hybrid vehicles.

Lema Romero, Cristian Fernando
Correa Bernal, Daniel
In this paper we develop the necessary tools to apply the method of free acceleration to determine the effective power of an internal combustion engine. For this we take the CKP sensor signal of the studied vehicle for an acceleration cycle in accordance with the methodology proposed in this thesis and based on this signal, which records data of the instantaneous angular velocity of the motor, their characteristic curves are obtained. In particular it was necessary to overcome three major drawbacks: 1) Find an economical alternative to conventional data acquisition cards; 2) Raising the necessary requirements to develop software data processing and 3) To validate the method of free acceleration for both the determination of the motor moment of inertia (I) as its effective power. Once developed the tool for measuring the effective power it is necessary to induce failures to the engine so that it can later be reproducible as: disconnection of some sensors or actuators from the electronic fuel injection system, or simulating some of their signals. Finally is compared the engine power obtained by inducing each of the failures against the engine power in optimum operating conditions. It was observed that not necessarily all modes induced substantially affect the power failure; the most representative were those that literally inactivate any of the engine cylinders.

Antamba Guasgua, Jaime Fernando
The project focuses on the diagnosis of the operating condition on spark-ignition engine of the vehicle, analyzing the result of motor combustion with different octanes in the gasoline. The objective of diagnosing wear condition of the spark-ignition engine in the test vehicle with local gasoline through an oil analysis. In the research process techniques of oil analysis are utilized for diagnosis of the engine, centered in two diagnosis scenarios relating health, contamination and wear of the lubricant with engine´s operating conditions. The engine of the test vehicle used Super and Extra gasoline; the lubricant achieves a maximum degradation of 11%. The contamination levels of the lubricant are nil for glycol, water and fuel in the vehicle engine during period of data collection. The levels of metal particles due to wear of aluminum and iron are within permissible limits, and result of concentration obtained in the particle quantification index establishes an appropriate operating condition. Finally, the wear of the test vehicle engine is within permissible ranges that maintain its functionality, the use of the Extra gasoline improves the TBN behavior.

Salazar Haro, Edison Francisco

The present work deals with the design and construction of a team, to diagnose and help solve problems of convergence, in light and semi-light automotive, with a gross weight of up to three tons. It begins by performing a comparative analysis of the implications and consequences due to negative and neutral positive convergences. Then the different characteristics that the team must have are analyzed, so that the different convergence anomalies can be shown and measured. The equipment was designed, which was divided into three stages: mechanical, electrical and electronic. The mechanical stage comprises the structure of the equipment. The electrical stage constituted by the design and construction of a longitudinal movement sensor. The electronic stage consists of a microcontroller which, once the microprocessor has been programmed, performs the measurement process based on the variables: relative displacement and potential difference. The designed and constructed elements are integrated into the equipment, which through a test protocol was evaluated both empty and loaded.

This study evaluates the use of TiO2 used in the cooling system of a diesel engine as an alternative for reducing NOx and PM emissions into the environment. The preparation of the nanofluid was performed using the two-step method, where the titanium nanoparticles were dispersed in the Valvoline G12+++ brand refrigerant, which meets the ASTM D-3306 and ASTM D-4985 standards, using an ultrasound probe. The volume concentration of nanoparticles was defined as 0,5 % v/v due to the improved fluid stability and reduction in sedimentation time. To evaluate the effect of the nano-coolant on exhaust gas reduction, an inline 4-cylinder diesel engine vehicle was used, using the IM-240 cycle. Tests showed a 1% reduction in NOx and 60% in PM, a 17% decrease in exhaust gas temperatures at the engine inlet of the coolant of 29% and 23% at the engine outlet of the coolant, showing that the higher the heat transfer capacity of the cooling system, the more the nanofluid enters the engine with a slight reduction in temperature, maintaining this tendency at the engine outlet.

Jima Matailo, Juan Carlos
The main project aims to investigate the uses of alternative fuels for diesel cycle engines, specifically mixtures of diesel-kerosene in different volumetric concentrations that allow vary the viscosity, density and cetane number. The addition of kerosene seeks to reduce the quantity of Nitrogen Oxides that is generated in the polluting emissions of this kind of engines. For this, it’s necessary to prove the performance of the engine for each fuel using and standardized cycle IM-240, which was carried out in the Centro de Transferencia Tecnológica para la Capacitación e Investigación en Control de Emisiones Vehiculares (CCICEV) of the Escuela Politecnica Nacional (EPN) located in the city of Quito. Once done the testes, we proceed to analyze the results through a statistic study that allows visualize the effects of the use for each fuel, demonstrating that, effectively, the NOx presents in the emissions are reduced. At the end, the best mixture of fuel was 80% Diesel with 20% kerosene.

In this document it is shown a methodology for determination of power, work and indicated mean pressure of an atmospheric Otto engine, respect to altitude above sea level by means of a thermodynamic analysis, using for this purpose the information provided by sensors that equipped the electronic fuel injection system and air – fuel ratio determined by lambda factor (λ), which is obtained with a gas analyzer. Indicated and operating parameters that have directly influence on engine performance have been determined, and in the same way is established a test protocol to obtain the variables for the calculation of these indicated parameters. As a result of the research is obtained a correlation between indicated parameters obtained in static test and altitude increasing, showing an average loss of zero point five percent for each hundred meters of high.

The present study it allowed to evaluate the performance of a vehicle with motive diesel cycle, adapted a system of combustible LPG as fuel of contribution. For it it was necessary to adapt a system LPG to a vehicle with diesel engine, tests and operations of functioning were realized in the vehicle of adapted diesel engine a system of supply of LPG as fuel of contribution. The investigation centred on realizing the tests of: Torque, Power, Opaqueness, Material Particulado and Consumption of diesel fuel, using different contributions of LPG in the diesel engine by means of the cycle of conduction IM240. The methodology that one proposed for the development of the project was of experimental type, since it was realized by means of the adjustment of the system of LPG to a vehicle by diesel engine, in which there were effected tests of functioning, gas measurement and a comparison of the results was realized by a vehicle by normal diesel engine. The results that were obtained it allowed to know that the use of LPG like fuel of contribution does not contribute to the environment due to the fact that it does not help to diminish the values of opaqueness and material particulado, alone we obtain an improvement in torque and it promotes, to the moment to increase the quantity of LPG to major quantities the vehicle begins to have sounds of metallic hammering due to the fact that the oxygen is diminished in the chamber of combustion, and the fuel is not mixed well by the air having a delay of the ignition.

Proaño Sánchez, Patricia Mariana
The present document aims to characterize steels used on the construction of the survival zone of body structures of vehicles utilized for public interprovincial transportation through chemical, mechanical and microstructural essays on tube samples from steels. The project includes verifying the compliant of requirements established on national standards RTE INEN 043:2015 and the quality of T and butt weld according to AWS standards. Additionally, simulations of structure were carried out with the different steels analyzed in order, to observe the performance of the survival zone, giving as results no invasion. The materials for this project were of two kinds: first one local and second one imported; none of them complied with the chemical and mechanical properties established on the national standard INEN 2415:2016; besides, local material did not complied with the galvanized thickness. For welded joints, local and imported steels do not complied the requirements of the established in the standard, for this reason it is suggested further inspections that include, physical and mechanical essays of base material and welded joints.

Diseño e Implementación de un Prototipo de Escáner Automotriz, con Visualización de Datos en Tiempo Real y Cálculo de Parámetros Indicados y Efectivos de un Motor de Combustión Interna
Andrade Sánchez, Félix Andrés
Pereira Salazar, Roberto Patricio
The main goal of this project focuses on the design of a prototype automotive scanner that allows communication with the engine control unit (ECU) of a vehicle, in order to receive data from it, interpret them, interact with the vehicle’s computer and mathematically generate the calculations of indicated and effective parameters of the engine. An intuitive graphic interface is developed, based on the Gedis guide, generating in this way a correct design of the human machine interface. The design begins with an analysis of the commercial scanners in our environment, proceeding with the selection of the elements, based on the technical requirements that the prototype must comply; these requirements are obtained through the quality function deployment (QFD), defining the main functions of the prototype: Calculation of effective parameters, reading and deletion of fault codes and reading of data flow. In order to comply the necessary requirements, the Arduino® and SparkFun® electronic cards are selected for data acquisition and interpretation. On the other hand, the visualization and the human machine interface are developed in PC in the Matlab® software. Validation in the calculation function of engine parameters obtained by the prototype was performed with a calibrated and certified equipment, which provides reliability to the results of the prototype presented. This equipment is the dynamometer of the Technological Transfer Center for Training and Research in Control of Vehicle Emissions. The validation of the other functions of the prototype is carried out with the Autel MaxiSys MS906.

Andrade Cordero, Juan Pablo
Bautista Illescas, Wellington Patricio
The activity of motor sport in Ecuador has been developed for several years without the use of technical tools of calculation and design, which has generated an automotive field lacking in competitiveness and development. The aim of this work is the compilation of theoretical information of several methods of calculation, design and construction of engines, through the information segmented and analyzed software was developed by programming in MATLAB, which allows to calculate and size the variables of a engine to obtain greater power and performance thereof to automate the redesign of the motors of commercial use for sports purposes. The data provided by the software were applied to development of a G10 engine obtaining 16% increase in compression ratio, The average speed of the piston changed from 12.8m/s to 17m/s, on the other hand the power and revolutions per minute (rpm) increased by 37% and 25% respectively. Finally these results were corroborated with the aid of a dynamometric bench.

Lincango Tite, Diego Luis
Vega Fiallos, Kleber Alexander
The main project is a part of the PIMI 10 – 15 research project "Study of the production of biodiesel for the automotive sector under supercritical conditions and evaluation of its mechanical and environmental performance in internal combustion engines ignited by compression". The objective is to evaluate the polluting emissions generated while the vehicle is driving under the European Cycle NEDC (New European Drive Cycle) in a compression - ignition internal combustion engine using biodiesel fuel blends produced from palm oil by basic transesterification and in supercritical conditions.
The biodiesel was produced by basic transesterification and under supercritical conditions in LACBAL (Laboratorio de Combustibles, Biocombustibles y Aceites Lubricantes), and the tests were carried out in the Technological Transfer Center for Training and Research in Vehicle Emissions Control – CCICEV; these laboratories belong to the Escuela Politécnica Nacional, Quito Ecuador. Were used three fuels: Premium diesel (DP), Premium diesel blend with 10% palm biodiesel obtained under supercritical conditions (BSC10), and Premium diesel blend with 10% palm biodiesel obtained by basic catalysis (BCB10). Were performed five tests for each fuel and were calculated the emission factors using the simplified combustion model. The results showed that in the mixture of BSC10 under super critical conditions the CO, HC, PM decrease, and there is an increasing in the CO2 content, improving the combustion; for this reason, the NOx increased too.

Tumbaco Casa, Klever Armando
This work aims to study the incidence of oil viscosity change in CO2 emissions and mechanical losses. Therefore, a diesel van with 3000 cc turbocharged engine was used, in this vehicle, fuel consumption values were recorded from the first oil change at 204631 km, this in order to visualize the performance behavior of fuel over the life of the lubricant. From the second lubricant change at 209965 km, torque and power tests were performed to find mechanical losses using the indicator diagram method, in consequence, the LSP 3000 chassis dynamometer was used at 0, 3500 and 5000 km and to determine the change in viscosity of the lubricant three extractions of 100 ml were made at 2500, 3500 and 5000km, the samples were sent to the EPN (Escuela Politécnica Nacional) Lubricant Laboratory to assess kinematic viscosity at 100 °C; finally in the third lubricant change at 215095 km is continued only with the recording of fuel consumption data. As a result of this experimentation, it was obtained that the fuel economy in the three lubricant changes has the similar behavior where there is a decrease of 11% from 3500 km, because it goes from 36 km/gal to 32 km/gal, so CO2 emissions increased by 18,2%; it was also found that a variation in the kinematic viscosity of the oil that increased by 6,48% caused a 41,36% increase in mechanical losses, compared to initial losses.

An evident increase in respiratory conditions in citizens from Quito, the presence of dark clouds early in the morning around the center of the city, and the noticeable pollution in streets where diesel engine vehicles circulation is frequent, have been evidenced in Quito. This research analyzes current standard for emissions and determine if the limits defined are suitable to warrant good air quality. In addition, vehicles’ technological conditions and fuel quality than allows or inhibit the establishment of stricter standards, have been taken into account. The quantity of analyzed data in the current research provide a suitable level of confidence to generalize research conclusions. Once these research was concluded it was determined that there is a stagnation in the process of evolution for pollutant emissions standard valid in the city and that the correlation between pollution in exhaust gases and opacity of those gases is not close. Moreover, the existence of a vehicle population and a fuel quality adequate to comply to stricter standards was also evidenced.

The purpose of this project is to develop and implement an electronic voice control system, by using free software and hardware to improve the safety, comfort and interactivity of a conventional vehicle. This is mainly due to the need to reduce motor vehicle accidents induced by distracting activities while driving, as well as the high cost of a system capable of controlling the electronic actuators by voice. For which, it began with the review of the state of the art and the development of the source code. Next, through an experimental design, the voice recognition system was simulated; using a free hardware microcontroller, a voice recognition module, a relay module and by means of a protoboard, a series of LEDs were connected with their respective resistors; these LEDs simulated the electronic actuators of the vehicle when changing from a High/Low state when pronouncing a preset command. Later, this system was implemented in a conventional vehicle and launched thanks to a Raspberry Pi computer board, which in turn led to the system having various levels of security and the possibility of loading a free operating system focused on ethical hacking. In addition, a parking assistant activated by the same voice recognition system was installed, which has a series of ultrasonic sensors and an acoustic signal that is activated when the vehicle encounters an obstacle less than a meter away.

Parra Escorza, Tania Vanesa
Lara Sanchez, Christian Javier
The present study carried out the characterization of 6 samples of lubricating oils (AL) selected as the most commercialized. The results were compared with the technical requirements established by the manufacturers of the MEP, as well as those of the Ecuadorian regulation NTE INEN 2027:2011. The analyzed oils were named as follows; A00, K00, M00, S00, T00, and V00. The comparison concluded that 5 of the 6 samples meet all the requirements of the INEN standard. Adittionally, it was found that the K00 sample showed the best values in almost all the parameters analyzed, except in BN. It was also found that all ALs contained at least 4 of the 5 types of wear particles. In addition, it was determined that K00 incorporated a greater number of additives and M00 contained the least amount of additives. The sample that presented the most negative differences regarding to its technical sheet was V00, while K00 presented less variability. However, the differences for samples K00, M00 and S00 were minimal. Finally, the requirements of the manufacturers were compared to the analyzed properties of each AL. From this analysis, it was found that of all the LAs used in this study, only two brands are considered by the manufacturer for their use. However, the SAE of these two brands is not the same since the recommendation is oriented to European countries or countries with a weather with marked seasons.

Guachamin Quishpe, Nelson Paul
Salas Haro, Walter Adrián
This work proposes a preventive maintenance plan for an electric public transport buses. Electric buses are going to replace the Internal combustion motor buses in the next years, due to energy efficiency Laws. Preventive maintenance of an electric bus has a very wide field of application, so this research focuses specifically on the power train.
Before carrying out this maintenance plan, components that make up the power train of an electric bus are studied and once their behavior is known, possible failures of these elements are detected. A fault tree was used to identify the possible problems that each of these elements may experience. Then the faults are codified for a better recognition. Finally, activities are proposed to reduce de failure of an electric bus.
There are not statistics of the power train failures at Ecuador; so, this work is based on scientific publications, documentation, and experiences of other countries that already have this vehicle type. This information is used to relate the Ecuador reality, then maintenance activities are proposed and a plan is carried out for preventive maintenance, which will consist of specific activities to be carried out in each of the components of the power train.

In this research, a comparison study was conducted on two scientific articles previously prepared to measure the amount of pollutant emissions and particulate matter generated by a compression or diesel engine when a route cycle was completed in the Metropolitan District of Quito. For these tests, additives and cerium oxide were used in different percentages added to the diesel and the fuel consumption was analyzed with respect to the mileage traveled.
The purpose of this research was to identify the advantages of using nanoparticles when combined with fossil fuels, reducing particulate matter emissions and increasing vehicle efficiency. In order to obtain the results, measurements were made by means of dynamic tests allowing the collection of information in real time at different amounts of diesel and nanoadditives.
The results were statistically analyzed by means of Pareto diagrams of the main parameters existing in a diesel internal combustion engine with the use of nanoparticles and the values in MP2.5, CO and CO2 were reduced, obtaining as results a considerable reduction of polluting gases and fuel consumption, giving greater importance to nanoparticles in the automotive field

The main objective of the present study is to generate a proposal regarding the modification of the RTV standard in Ecuador, for the inspection of electric vehicles. The modifications were based on the current legal regulations in Ecuador and the international regulations regarding electrical vehicles. A study of the main components to be evaluated of electric vehicles is carried out, which will have to be included as review elements in the RTV and in this way the proposal to modify the current standard is made. It was determined that the modification proposal must be based on the Ecuadorian Technical Standard INEN V2.0 349:2003, where it is stipulated that the current article is VEHICULAR TECHNICAL REVISION PROCEDURES / PROCEDURES TO ROAD VEHICLES TECHNICAL INSPECTION V2.0, for which details the review components and their scope, establishing through the proposal the modifications for the technical review of electric vehicles.

The present research deals with the application of machine learning architectures for the identification of different driving operations and their effects on PIDs due to the influence they have on engine behavior. Through a bibliographic review it is justified that among the most used PIDs for the diagnosis of injection systems are the signal of the Oxygen Sensor and the short and long term fuel adjustments. These variables are altered by the environmental characteristics of high altitude cities such as Cuenca, so the standard data and the dynamic behavior of the signals are not the same as at sea level, which is why we seek to determine the normal behavior of those mentioned. PIDs during different driving operations such as starting, acceleration, deceleration and cruising speed. For this purpose, it is shown that the application of different machine learning architectures such as fuzzy logic, neural networks, vector support machines, K-means and classification trees serve for the detection and classification of different driving maneuvers.

Boada Freire, Franklin Alejandro
Pesántez Orellana, Alex Alfredo
The objective of this work is to develop a protocol for the efficient use of energy in heavy road freight transport in Ecuador and its impact on CO2 emissions. For this purpose, an analysis of energy consumption in the transport sector was carried out, as well as a characterization of the national vehicle fleet according to vehicle class, load capacity and brands in accordance with current national regulations.
The protocol applies the fundamentals of vehicle dynamics, efficient driving, route optimization and maintenance.
The most relevant parameters that influence energy consumption were selected from experiences in other countries and that can be implemented in our country considering vehicle geometry, topography, climatic conditions, traffic and road network limitations.
The results of the implementation were estimated, obtaining significant reductions in fuel consumption as in the case of cabin deflectors (6.35%), low rolling resistance tires (5%), efficient driving (40%) and it was detailed how the lack of maintenance increases the vehicle's energy consumption. Thus, it was corroborated that CO2 emissions are reduced, contributing to sustainable development and environmental conservation.
