Resumen: Intramontane basin studies in Ecuador, whose goals include the study of sedimentary sequences, the origin of the sediments, the tectonic evolution and the research for nonmetallic mineral resources for the economic exploitation. This work focuses in the study of the sedimentology and stratigraphy in the northern Malacatos - Vilcabamba basin, the main objective is to define the stratigraphic relationships and tectono–sedimentary evolution between "La Granja" northeastern and northwest blocks. The Neogene sedimentary basin fill, from base to top, is formed by San José, Santo Domingo, San Francisco and Cerro Mandango formations. The stratigraphic relationship has been reconsidered through field observations and sedimentological criteria. Respect to the sedimentary evolution, it was determined two deposit systems affected by marine transgressions and regressions, which were developed in an environment of coastal margin. San Jose and San Francisco formations were deposited in a deltaic system with interdistributary bays and tidal influence, while the Santo Domingo Formation was deposited in tidal flat system. Structurally the basin has tectonic limits and intrabasin faults. Limits and tectonic relationship between northwest and northeast blocks "La Granja" were established. Furthermore, Picota fault and its relationship to the northeastern block "La Granja" was studied. Finally, synsedimentary episodes of deformation, the regional tilting of the basin to the east, observed in the northwestern block and the tilting of the northeastern block "La Granja" to the northeast were recognized.
