Resumen: The b value is a parameter of the relation Gutenberg-Richter that characterizes the distribution of the number of earthquakes according to the magnitude. The slope of this relation at the global level is 1. In this work the b value in Cotopaxi volcano, between 2013 and 2016 was determined and changes were observed in space and time, in a period that includes VEI = 1 eruption, which began in August 2015. The highest values (1.3-2.0) were located on the western flank of the volcano and could be caused by the activity of a fault system or by the activity of the hydrothermal system of the volcano by the intrusion of a set of dikes whose magmatic source was a reservoir located to the south-west of the volcano. We also observed values of 1.4 in the south-west sectors, associated with the activity of this reservoir and nor-east of the volcano caused by the migration of fluids from the south-west, through a system of NE-SO direction faults. As for variation over time, it was observed that b parameter took four well-marked behaviors: initially it showed high values (b = 1.1-1.6) from 02/14/2014 until 06/06/2014, followed by a descent (b = 0.9 - 1.0) until 08/13/2015, just prior to the onset of eruption. Afterwards, the period characterized by ash emissions presented an increase of b (b = 1.9) until 08/01/2016 and finally, when the eruptive activity ended, the b value remained constant at a moderate level (b = 1.2) until the end of 2016.
