Abstract: The present study aims to obtain biochar from balsa sawdust by dry torrefaction. A physical, chemical and thermal characterization of the sawdust was carried out. Also, the operating conditions that allowed the best energy efficiency of the biochar were determined at laboratory scale. For this purpose, the balsa sawdust was placed in a high pressure reactor in an inert atmosphere, and it was subjected to temperatures of 220, 250, 280 and 300 °C, for 15 and 30 minutes. After that, the effect of the pressure (50, 150 and 640 kgf/cm2) and temperature (of 17, 80 and 640 °C) during pressing of biochar pellets on the hardness of the materials were assessed. Then, the mechanical durability, resistance to compression, impact resistance, and density of the pellets were determined. The highest energy efficiency of the biochar was 87.18 % at 220 °C and 15 min. The pellets with the best mechanical characteristics were pressed at 160 °C and 640 (kgf/cm2). The hardness, resistance to compression, mechanical durability, impact resistance, density and final caloric were 76 (shore A), 7.12 MPa; 76.25 %, 100 %, density of 574.69 (kg/m3), and 24,83 (MJ/kg), respectively. Therefore, by this method the balsa sawdust waste can be used as raw material for the production of biochar and by densifying, pellets with mechanical properties suitable for their manipulation and storage were obtained.
