Abstract: In this final career project, we study the IEEE 802.11 wireless network parameters and their relationship with the quality of the connection. To this aim, we used a scenario made up of an access point (AP) and a laptop. The experiment consists of a client (laptop) – server (AP) application that sends packets at different distances. The procedure is developed in six consecutive stages. It begins reviewing and selecting seven parameters that allow us to characterize the wireless network. This project also considers two different residential profiles according to their use of the Internet connection. We use WirelessMon to acquire the network statistics. This software reads the network characteristics imbibed into the MAC frames. In addition, WirelessMon allows logging the acquired data. We perform fifteen measurements for the data acquisition process, at eight different distances. These measurements take place on different days and variating the parameters of the transmitter. The information obtained is treated with the exponential moving average, in order to reduce the variations between samples. The values previously processed are classified using logistic regressions. These arranged data search the influence that could have those parameters to evaluate the quality of the connection. The aforementioned process is done using a Matlab algorithm. The results show that the combination of the number of bits per packet with the rate of retransmitted frames is the best way to describe the status of the network. This combination is valid for both residential profiles with low demand and high demand. Finally, we propose a method to evaluate the network status using the most relevant parameters combined with the throughput.
