Abstract: The aim of this project is to design a treatment plant for snacks wastewater by means of fixed bed biofiltration. First, the effluent feeds into a screening channel and a grit chamber, where thick solids and total suspend solids are removed. The pretreatment ends with flow and organic load homogenization in a stirred tank. In the subsequent stage regarding to fixed bed biofiltration, BOD (Biochemical Oxygen Demand) and COD (Chemical Oxygen Demand) parameters are reduced with a biofilm bonded to 6 mm diameter spheres made of PET, contained in five aerated cylindrical columns, which operate in parallel and whose nominal volume is 0,44 m3. The process is completed with the sedimentation stage, from which a clarified liquid that meet the local regulations is obtained. Weirs, pipes and pumps were designed to transport the effluent through the different unit operations. The plant was designed to operate in continuous mode and for a maximum flow of 31,59 m3/day. A treatment cost of 5,04 USD per cubic meter of fed effluent was estimated, with a cost-benefit ratio of 1,23.
