Zusammenfassung: The purpose of this work is to study the weldability of the high percentage of carbon and chromium steel, AISI D3 by using an austenitic-ferritic electrode E312-16, and employing the shield metal arc welding (SMAW) process. The chemical composition of steel causes poor weldability level and its microstructure makes it sensitive to the appearance of pores and cracks. The selected electrode, generally used with stainless steels, is recommended for steels with difficult weldability and high strength, and it also must be accompanied by pre and post welding heat treatments. In order to generate the weldability indicators of the steel, weldability tests were carried out under the guidelines established in the AWS B4.0 standard; hot cracking trend is analyzed through the Varestraint test and the cold cracking trend is studied through the Cruciform test. In order to weld the specimens for the weldability tests, two preheating temperatures are established based on the martensitic transformation temperature of the base material. Thermal stress relief treatments were applied to the Cruciform specimens. Finally, the results of the non-destructive and destructive tests performed on the welded configurations are presented, these standardized tests allow us to distinguish the degree of influence of the restrictions imposed in both weldability tests on the generation of discontinuities.
