Abstract: Among the non-intrusive methods of water flow velocity measurement there are several visualization and image analysis techniques. The visualization of water flows consists in observing the movement of mechanically passive tracer particles with the aid of visual recording instruments and adequate light sources so that the captured images may be analyzed through matrixial processes and the flow velocity may be determined. This study proposes a non-intrusive flow velocimetry method through the use of the Photron Fastcam Mini Ux100 high-speed camera and a Matlab analysis script created by the study’s author. The mean velocity of the flow is obtained through the matrixial analysis of the recorded images. This method was applied in two distinct hydrodynamic channels in the Escuela Politécnica Nacional in Quito, Ecuador with a series of free surface flows in order to analyze different flow velocity conditions. The results obtained through the proposed method were compared with mean flow velocity values measured by an OTT brand Small Current Meter C2 and calculated through the concept of flow continuity. The divergence between the results of the proposed method and those obtained for its validation were minimal in all the experiments that were carried out.
