Factores determinantes de la propensión a migrar en Latinoamérica en 2016

Abstract

Latin America is a region characterized by high emigration ratios around the world. Factors that determine migration are inconclusive. By means of a synthesis-theory-based approach, this study explores the potential implications of political factors on the propensity to migrate of Latin Americans. Using data from the Latinobarómetro survey, we built synthetic indicators using Multiple Correspondence Analysis (MCA) that represent the economic and political perspectives of Latin Americans. For this purpose, we use a Probit model with instrumental variables that fix endogeneity of some synthetic indicators. The results show that decay of democratic institutions and political system, as well as higher levels of insecurity, encourage Latin Americans to leave their homeland.
