Zusammenfassung: Portoviejo’s City is located in a wide valley formed by alluvial deposits of the Portoviejo River. The present study identifies sedimentary basement facies and fill in order to improve the paleoenvironmental knowledge of the area. Sedimentological study and fossil content of four drill cores located from Portoviejo’s City to the mouth of the river (Crucita Beach) were applied. This study analyzed the fossil content of 24 samples from the core drills. The suborders of foraminifera were identified and represented in the Murray’s Ternary Diagram (1991) in order to interpret the paleoenvironments together with lithologies. The lithofacies of the four drill cores were represented in stratigraphic columns and were correlated in a NNW-SSE section. The correlation allows differentiate three paleoenvironment units: shelf, estuary and fluvial. Shelf lithofacies are related to the sedimentary basement, which is interpreted as the Villingota Formation, characterized by sandy siltstones with lamination (Fsl and Fl) and shelf foraminifera assemblages (P-04 drill). Some samples are related to littoral assemblages similar to lagoons; represented by shales (Fm) with more organic matter content (P-04 y P-15). The estuary and fluvial facies are Quaternary sediments, with the presence of foraminifers in sandy lithofacies (Sm) and sandy siltstones (Fsm o Sfm) related to hyposaline paleoenvironments such as marshes and lagoons at the base of the estuary fill (P-04, P-15, PVS-5). The silty sandstones facies (Fsm o Sfm) with no foraminifera and shells content are interpreted such as facies with fluvial influence and the end of estuary fill (P-04 y PVS-4).
