Zusammenfassung: Tungurahua (5023m asl) is an active andesitic stratovolcano, part of the Main Volcanic Arc of the Ecuadorian Andes, located in the Eastern Cordillera, whose last eruptive processes was registered between 1999- 2016. In this work, we designed a methodology to study the geomorphological evolution of the Tungurahua crater and its relationship with volcanic activity, based on oblique aerial images (visual and thermal) obtained by the staff of the IG-EPN, digital elevation models and orthophoto models (existing and created) from 2002 - 2018. During this time, the crater underwent a series of changes in shape, size and volume that resulted in its current morphology, with certain implications on volcanic risk. The most quantity of changes were generated in the Post-2007 period, in response to a change in the eruptive dynamism of the volcano. It was identified three main factors that have controlled the morphology of the summit area: (i) pre-eruptive conditions, (ii) syn-volcanic processes and (iii) post-eruptive processes. From them, the action of syn-volcanic construction processes predominated in the geomorphological history of the crater, obtaining between 2008-2016 an accumulation of volcanic material in the crater with a net volume of ~ 4.25x106 m3, increasing in that way its base level in 46 m (4761 m snm)). During this time, the internal crater increased in size and developed an asymmetrical profile, with a higher southeastern border and a lower notch-shaped northwestern border. Additionally, the configuration of the crater gradually reduced its capacity to contain new volcanic material and could have influenced in the formation of small pyroclastic density currents (PDCs) and gravitational pyroclastic flows in the late phases of the eruptive cycle, mainly on the northwestern flank of the volcanic edifice.
