Zusammenfassung: The present work has aimed to study and evaluate the AISI 4140 steel weldability making use of the welding, shielded metal-arc (SMAW). This steel is employed by the company SERTECPET S.A. in order to manufactures bottom hole completion tools under the API specification 19-AC. The mains properties of this material are the high tensile strength and yield strength values due to the amount of carbon and alloy elements such as Cr and Mo that have a significant effect on cracking susceptibility of the weld metal. The ASME Boiler and Pressure Code was adopted to provide the qualification of the procedures employed in welding AISI 4140 steel joints evaluating their mechanical performance with the application of mechanical and nondestructive tests. An experimental method was used to resolve the welding variables, it has been based on the characteristics and properties of the material, also the heat treatment diagrams and metallurgy of the steel. The best results were obtained with the AISI 4140 (110 ksi) steel when the preheat temperature is applied under the martensite transformation temperature (MS), the filler metal ought to have a lower content of carbon and hydrogen to prevent the massive formation of carbide precipitates in the heat affected zone (HAZ) and it’s recommendable the practice of post weld heat treatment (PWHT) with fast rate cooling if it’s possible.
