Abstract: The objective of this project was to determine the type of vermifilter with the highest efficiency in reducing COD, present in wastewater from the dairy industry, by continuous flow through various granular and biological filter substrates, and a constant hydraulic rate. Two vermfitration systems were designed on a laboratory scale, using 6-liter PET bottles and 4 layers of filter material each 6 cm high. In both vermifilters, coarse and fine gravel was used as a support layer, with a particle size of 10 to 12 mm, and 6 to 8 mm, respectively. The middle layer was different for each vermifilter, being sand in the first and anthracite in the second, with particle sizes of 0.5 to 1 mm, and 0.6 to 1.6 mm, respectively. The upper layer, called the active layer, was made up of two biotic species: Eisenia foetida, and Canna indica. The vermifilters were operated under gravity for 6 weeks, keeping constant the hydraulic rate and the surface organic load, at 1.3 m3 / m2-day, and 1851.6 gCOD / m2-day, respectively. The effluent and effluents of the biosystems were monitored for COD, pH, conductivity and turbidity, once a week for the first four weeks, and three times a week for the last two weeks of operation. The results obtained showed that the maximum efficiency achieved in each biological system presented a slight difference, being 93.93% and 93% for the vermifilter with a middle layer of sand and anthracite respectively.
