Descripción: This work identifies the distribution that allows describing the maximum daily surge height data in the Esmeraldas canton. The extreme value theory allows finding a distribution that describes the surge, being the two-parameter Normal and Gamma distributions the best fits based on the data downloaded from the INOCAR web page. To determine the distribution, the extreme value distributions are analyzed, as well as the Normal and Gamma distributions. It is concluded that the truncated distributions allow to model more efficiently the surge, if it is separated into summer and winter seasons, if the maximum height of the surge is considered to be at grade five according to the Douglas scale, as the upper truncation limit. The stopping time expectation represents the return period in hydrology, it is shown that the stopping time N=inf{n≥1:Xn>x0} follows a geometric distribution and the relationship between return period and surge height is analyzed.
