Abstract .- The physical - chemical characterization of gaseous emissions and particulate material from the iron smelting process raised the need to establish a system of treatment, since the particulate material discharged to the atmosphere exceeds the maximum permissible limit under the Ordinance N° 404. In order to comply with regulations in the Metropolitan District of Quito, is suggested a treatment system in series for collecting particulate material and consisting of a heat exchanger of cross-flow two streams, and two equipments particulate control. The heat exchanger has as objective to cool the stream of gaseous emissions from the smelting process, to facilitate later the collection of the particulate material. The cyclone collects coarse particles with an efficiency of 95 %, and the bag filter collects fine particulate material to 99 % efficiency. At the end of the collection process, the particulate material discharged to the atmosphere has a diameter of 5 μm and a concentration of 0,821 ppm; being a workable design as it meets with the provisions of Ordinance N° 404 (particulate material discharge ≤ 200 ppm).
