Abstract: This document is aimed at those who are working with an insulin - glucose model. We provide a simulation platform that will enable to evaluate and improve different control techniques in the way to develop an artificial pancreas system. The Cobelli model is the first computer simulator accepted by the FDA as substitute for animal trials. The model contains twelve differential equations so, its solution by using numerical methods demands powerful resources what will affect the simulation time. A FPGA is an option to reduce the simulation time, depending principally in the number of available multipliers. For example, the simulation time in FPGA is about 1200 times less than the one in Matlab. Therefore, we have implemented a Cobelli insulin - glucose model in a FPGA together with a computer interface that helps to show the levels of glucose and insulin obtained from the simulation, the response of the system is verified with a PID controller. The model is implemented in a Virtex 5 XC5VLX110T FPGA available in High Frequency Laboratory at National Polytechnic School. This device does not have the necessary resources to comply the simulation, so it has been necessary to optimize resources using multipliers in an iterative way which have increased the computational time. The simulation results for a diabetic type 1 model with insulin infusion, using a PID control system, are similar those obtained by the same author in an improved model. The system keeps glucose and insulin levels in normal ranges for a patient with defined parameters.
