Abstract .- Sangay Volcano (2.002°S, 78.341°W; 5230 m) is one of the most active volcano in Ecuador and the world. Here we present the results of a study of the debris flow avalanche deposits located between Palora and Macas (south-east of Ecuador in the Amazon Basin), generated by Sangay Volcano. The debris flow avalanche deposits are defined as DAE-S1 for the older deposit (250-100 Ka corresponding to the age of the construction of the edifice of Sangay I and II as reported by Monzier et al., 1999) and DAE-S2 for the younger deposit (29 Ka, determined by 14C dating); these avalanche have a run out of more than 60 km from the crater in areas that are inhabited (Palora, Sangay, Arapicos, Santa Inés, Pablo VI, and others).Statistical analysis of the distribution of the hummocky morphology was conducted using GIS and showed that the largest volume deposits were located in the middle of the affected area, between 40 and 50 km from the eruptive center of Sangay volcano. This is probably because the material impacted with a ridge of elevated topography by approx. 500 m, located in the central and southern parts to the east of the volcano. For this reason the flow was redirected around this zone of elevated topography and deposited more than 40 km to the north-east of the eruptive center. The deposits of the debris avalanche have a blocky facies, mixed facies and intermediate facies (the facies are composed of 50-60% blocky facies and 40-50% mixed facies); the intermediate facies is the most abundant. The rocks have a composition between andesite and basic andesite, are well preserved and generally contain jigsaw-cracks. The matrix is composed of pyroclastic material: 50% beige pumice, 40% free crystals (plagioclase, pyroxene and olivine) and 10% lithics and external material (non-volcanic). The petrological and geochemical characteristics of the avalanche deposits suggest that the most probable source for these deposits is Sangay Volcano. The area of the deposits DAE-S1 and DAE-S2 studied was 890 and 1300 km2 respectively. The volume of the deposits, the area affected and the potential energy involved in these avalanches demonstrates that the avalanches from Sangay volcano are some of the largest in the world when compared with other volcanoes. The deposits studied suggest that the characteristics of Sangay that led to the generation of such large avalanche deposits are very similar to the current state of the volcano. As the volcano is active and there is a large accumulation of material on the volcano´s flanks which have a slope of around 37° and more than 4000 m of relief above the surrounding area. For this reason, there is a possibility that future activity of this volcano could include large debris avalanches.
