Abstract .- The last official measure of potential GDP by the Central Bank of Ecuador, said that by 2002 the output gap estimated with a production function was 1.4%. In the following years dollarization has continued as the monetary regime in Ecuador, and the base year of national accounts was changed from 2000 to 2007. This background sets the importance to have a current estimation of potential GDP. This paper estimates the potential GDP and the output gap corresponding to Ecuador in the period 1965-2013. For this purpose, the following methodologies are used: production function, Kalman filter and Hodrick Prescott filter. In addition, theoretical relations are collected and studied to support the implementation of this variable as an indicator of inflationary pressures and empirical studies on this topic in other countries are reviewed. The results indicate that by 2013 the potential growth in Ecuador was 3.91% and the output gap was 1.82% (results obtained by estimating a function of potential output). Regarding the methodologies applied, the Hodrick Prescott represents a suitable alternative to estimate the variables in question.
