Resumen: Low-cost and decentralized wastewater treatment technologies, such as biofiltration systems, open an opportunity for improvement, both in coverage and in the quality of the sanitation service. The methodology used was based on the analysis of the characteristics of peanut shells and the study of biofiltration systems at laboratory scale for eleven weeks. The experimental model consisted of twelve biofilters, where each type (biofilters (C), vermifilter (L), wetland (P) and hybrid biofilter (LP)) operated in parallel with three hydraulic rates (0.5 (1), 1 (2) and 1.5 (3) m3 / m2 * day). The operation of the biofilters established that the lower hydraulic rate in the four typologies generated better conditions of hydraulic conductivity, with respect to international standards. While, the clogging was lower in C1, P1 and LP1. The COD elimination efficiencies were higher for L1 and LP1 with percentages of 87.4 and 82.4%, respectively. While, the highest SV elimination was given for P1 and LP1 with percentages of 63.7 and 58.1% respectively. Finally, the percentages of lignin and cellulose in the effluent were 31.7 and 28.6%, respectively, demonstrating that the material has adsorbent characteristics. In conclusion, the hybrid biofilter (LP) operated at rates of 0.5 m3 m2*day, was the most efficient and offers, operationally, better hydraulic conditions.
