Resumen: The present work develops a methodology that allows the numerical study of the Francis turbine with particulate flow in free and open-source software. The first step to accomplish that was the optimization of the computational domain generated from the geometry of one of the turbines of the San Francisco power plant in the province of Tungurahua, obtaining results that were validated by performing steady-state simulations of the turbine operating under normal charge conditions using the SIMPLE algorithm. Once the quality of these results was confirmed, the phenomenon was reproduced in a transient state using the PISO algorithm. Then, the simulation was calibrated to be able to use it in the coupled CFD-DEM method that simultaneously calculates the computational fluid mechanics (CFD) method with the discrete element method (DEM) allowing to analyze the effects of the fluid on the granular material and vice versa. The analysis of the wear due to the impact of the particles on the surface of the impeller and the guide vanes was also included. This study was carried out in the “CFDEM coupling” software, which is responsible for communicating the results obtained by OpenFOAM (CFD) with those calculated by LIGGGTHS (DEM) during the simulation, CFDEM coupling, LIGGGTHS and OpenFOAM are open-source software.
