Abstract

The present investigation analyzes the effect of remunerations and foreign participation on the competitiveness of large and medium-sized companies in Ecuador. The impact generated by these variables on the labor productivity of companies was investigated, controlling for the characteristics of the establishments. This study is complemented with a review of the literature that relates business competitiveness and labor productivity, and with an analysis of the state of competitiveness of the Ecuadorian business sector. Using information obtained from the Business Structural Survey (ENESEM 2019) and applying the Quantile Regression methodology due to the nature of the data, the results obtained show that both the level of labor costs and foreign participation have a positive influence on the competitiveness of the companies. These results, which are consistent with the academic literature, could be explained by Ecuador’s level of economic development.
